Chris King's Latest Innovations: Hub Tuning and Enhanced Performance
Chris King Precision Components, a long-standing supporter of the Santa Cruz Syndicate, has unveiled exciting updates to its renowned King hubs, offering riders a chance to boost their performance. While the hub spec on a World Cup DH-winning bike might not be the first thing on most people's minds, these new features demonstrate the potential for significant gains in speed and efficiency.
One of the key updates is the introduction of a 36-tooth RingDrive option, a coarser alternative to the traditional 72-tooth version. This change reduces drag, allowing the hub to roll faster. Chris King's President, Kirby Bedsaul, confirmed that the company has been working on these updates to enhance rolling speed, and the Syndicate team, driven by data and performance, embraced this innovation. Jackson's success in key races with the prototype 36T hub, which significantly reduces drag and noise, is a testament to its effectiveness.
The new Buzzworks 36T RingDrive is designed for backward compatibility with all previous ISO, Classic, and Boost Chris King hubs made since the 1990s. This feature ensures that riders can upgrade without replacing their existing hubs. The RingDrive kits are available for $150 USD and can be purchased directly from Chris King or through their authorized retailers.
Additionally, Chris King is expanding its options with 6-bolt hubs in the SuperBoost spacing configuration. This move brings the more common 6-bolt standard to their full Mountain Hub lineup, complementing the Centerlock options. The company had previously discontinued 6-bolt hubs but has reintroduced them to meet demand. The SuperBoost 6-bolt rear hubs are priced at $590 USD.
