And in a separate incident, another patient from the same hospital is alleged to have caused a car crash resulting in two fatalities. These events have sparked a conversation about the state of mental health care in New South Wales.
Chris Minns, the NSW Premier, has acknowledged the growing pressure on the public mental health system and emphasized the need to implement recommendations from the Bondi Junction stabbings inquest. He expressed concern over the security failings that led to these escapes, stating, "We need to ensure forensic hospitals and psychiatric wards have the necessary security measures to protect the public."
And this is the part most people miss: these concerns are not new. A year ago, psychiatrists threatened to resign en masse due to the working conditions and the risks associated with providing substandard care. A mental health professional, speaking anonymously, revealed that two psychiatrists at Cumberland Hospital resigned last year, replaced by doctors with reduced working hours.
The Cumberland branch president of the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association, Nick Howson, described the situation as "a systemic issue that has been brewing for years." He boldly stated, "The system is broken. We're just waiting for it to collapse."
A spokesperson from the Western Sydney Local Health District acknowledged the tragic incidents and confirmed that a formal review, including an external senior psychiatrist, will be conducted. They also highlighted that NSW Police are notified when a patient absconds from mental health care, as was the case in both incidents.
Minns acknowledged the growing pressure on the mental health system, welcoming the increasing number of people seeking help but emphasizing the need for adequate capacity to accommodate them. He stressed the importance of learning from these incidents to ensure the safety of both the community and individuals in need of care.
